Newlyweds back on dry land after spending honeymoon on stranded cruise ship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Thousands of cruise ship passengers, many from the Valley, are back on dry land after being stranded since Sunday.

Videos have surfaced capturing the first moments of crisis on the ship when the engine room blew, prompting alarms to go off.

Passengers say they smelled smoke and a crew member announced there was a lot of smoke in the engine area through the intercom. The crew member assured the passengers they were not sinking but they were stranded without electrical power, clogged toilets and food that was going bad.

Tugboats dragged the Carnival Splendor cruise ship to San Diego Thursday morning.

3TV was at the home of a Valley family whose loved ones were aboard the cruise ship. The couple got married Saturday and spent their honeymoon on the ship.

The 3,300 passengers were given a free Carnival cruise to use in the future.

The National Transportation and Safety Board is investigating.
