Harry Potter 7: Part 1, a bit dragging

The generation that has lived in the times of the phenomenon called Harry Potter will recall these times fondly - of times when fans slept through the night outside shops to get their copy of the book.

Sadly, as any hardcore fan will tell you, none of the movies have come close to match the trigger to imagination of the books. And the latest film, which is the first of the two parts based on the last book of the series, is no different.

That does not mean that the filmmakers will not attempt to match the money from the book that created the first billionaire author. Proof - "Deathly Hallows" is being released in two parts, with the first dragging quite a bit.

Yet "Deathly Hallows" stays truest to the book than any other film has so far.

After Dumbledore's death, Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) takes control of the ministry of magic. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermonie (Emma Watson) obviously cannot be in school.

Aided by a loyal group of supporters first, and later on their own, they try to find Voldemort's Horcruxes. Their search leads them to discover the story of the Deathly Hallows and its three sacred objects - the resurrection stone to bring anyone back to life, an unbeatable Elder Want and the infallible invisibility cloak. The fight between Voldemort and Harry now becomes a race to find these.

The most successful book franchise guarantees the success of the films. However, while the previous versions dared not do more fearing boredom, "Deathly Hallows" boldly goes there and breaks the films into two parts. But despite many commendable scenes and good special effects, without its twin, which will be released only in 2011, it does not hold much power.

That does not mean that people will not throng theatres to see the film, or will be disappointed by it. For "Deathly Hallows", despite its slow pace, is by far, the scariest film in the series with fear looming large over the film.

Yet, the 146-minute movie has many funny moments scattered across an otherwise gloomy landscape, like when many of Harry's friends drink a portion to become his duplicates, or when they literally flush themselves through a public toilet to enter the ministry of magic.

The three main protagonists have grown up now. The introduction of sexual tension between them, as also jealousy, spices up the film. The animation to explain the story of the "Deathly Hallows" is also rivetingly done.

The beginning of the end of one of the most successful franchises in cinema history, thus, may not be too engrossing in itself. It is definitely a strong build up to the grand finale, where the chosen one, Harry, will finally live up to his destiny.

That the next part will be in 3D, is merely the icing on the cake.

WikiLeaks releases list of global sites ’vital’ to US

Washington: WikiLeaks has divulged a secret list compiled by Washington of key infrastructure sites around the world that could pose a critical danger to US security if they come under terrorist attack. The newly released diplomatic cable is one of the most explosive yet out of many leaked by the whistle-blowing website that have heaped embarrassment on Washington and caused anger around the world. 



A State Department cable from February 2009 asked US missions to update a list of infrastructure and key resources worldwide whose loss "could critically impact" the country's public health, economic life and national security. It details undersea cables, key communications, ports, mineral resources and firms of strategic importance in countries ranging from Britain to New Zealand, via Africa, the Middle East and China.

A Canadian hydroelectric plant is described as a "critical irreplaceable source of power to portions of Northeast US," while a Siemens factory in Germany does "essentially irreplaceable production of key chemicals".

Also listed are European manufacturers of vaccines for smallpox and rabies, an Italian maker of treatment for snake-bite venom, and a German company making treatment for plutonium poisoning.

According to the diplomatic cable, the request was designed "to strengthen national preparedness, timely response, and rapid recovery in the event of an attack, natural disaster or other emergency".

Compilation of the list would help "prevent, deter, neutralise or mitigate the effects of deliberate efforts by terrorists to destroy, incapacitate or exploit" sites deemed of "vital" importance to the United States. Britain was quick to condemn release of the list as "damaging to national security".

The cable includes the British locations of undersea cables, satellite systems and defence plants. "We unequivocally condemn the unauthorised release of classified information," a spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron's Downing Street office said Monday.

The release will add to the political storm engulfing WikiLeaks and its 39-year-old founder Julian Assange, who broke cover on Friday to say in an online chat that he had boosted his security after receiving death threats. The website is already battling to secure its avenues for financial donations online, and has been hop-scotching across servers and legal jurisdictions to evade a total shutdown.

Facing repeated cyber-attack, Wikileaks has moved to ensure its information remains available. Mirror websites, which replicate WikiLeaks's data, have sprung up on servers in various countries.

England wins 2nd Ashes Test

Adelaide: Graeme Swann took three of the last six wickets to tumble as England dismissed Australia for 304 to complete a comprehensive innings and 71-run victory in the second Ashes test. England wrapped up the test and a 1-0 series lead before lunch on the final day, with Swann, Jimmy Anderson and Steven Finn combining to claim the last six wickets for 66 runs after Australia had resumed at 238-4 with high hopes of salvaging a draw or being saved by forecast rain.

"We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but if we keep these standards we have a good chance of winning the series," England captain Andrew Strauss said.

The third test starts December 16 in Perth and England, which holds the Ashes after winning at home last year, could conceivably retain the old urn by taking a 2-0 lead ahead of the fourth and fifth tests in Melbourne and Sydney. "We've been totally outplayed this game, there's no hiding that," Australia captain Ricky Ponting said. "Now we have to find a way to get better for Perth. "No doubt it's a bad loss for us, there's no hiding that fact, an innings and 70 runs having won the toss on a good Adelaide wicket, probably just about says it all."

Australia rallied for a stunning comeback win at Adelaide in the previous Ashes series at home, and went on to complete a 5-0 series sweep to avenge losing the previous series in England. But after a draw to open this series in Brisbane and the loss in Adelaide, Ponting's squad looks vulnerable to slumping to its first Ashes series loss on Australian soil in more than two decades.

After Michael Clarke was out on the last ball Monday evening to part-time spinner Kevin Pietersen, Australia's hopes rested on Mike Hussey working with the middle order and tailenders. But Finn made the crucial breakthrough when Hussey mistimed a pull to Anderson at mid-on to depart for 52.

Three wickets in four balls effectively ended Australia's chances of a draw. Anderson had Brad Haddin caught behind for 12 and trapped Ryan Harris lbw with consecutive deliveries. Harris' exit gave him two first-ball dismissals, known as a "king pair." He is only the second Australian batsman after Adam Gilchrist in 2001 who has had that dubious milestone in test cricket.

Two balls later, Swann had Marcus North trapped lbw for 22. England's appeal was initially turned down but the video umpire ruled that the ball had struck the Australian batsman in front of the stumps and would have gone on to dislodge the bails.

Swann then bowled Xavier Doherty and Peter Siddle to finish with a five-wicket haul and complete England's 100th test victory over Australia. Before the wickets fell, North had a reprieve on 3 when Swann struck his pad but he was adjudged not out by the video umpire. A chance from Hussey was dropped in the same over.

But England took the new ball and three overs later, the breakthroughs followed. The only setback for England was the abdominal injury for Stuart Broad which will rule the paceman out for the serious. Australia's woes continued with veteran opener Simon Katich injuring his Achilles and likely to miss the remainder of the series. 



Kevin Pietersen was voted player of the match after scoring a career-best 227 in England's 620-5 declared - helping the visitors to a 375-run first-innings lead - and taking the crucial wicket of Clarke to end the fourth day. "It's pretty incredible, (England) having been so bad four years ago to be 1-0 up in the Ashes," Pietersen said. "If we keep doing the right things, we'll win the Ashes."

WikiLeaks quotes Clinton: Mumbai plotter ran operation from jail

London: The alleged mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks - Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi - was running his group while still in prison in Pakistan, said US diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks.

According to BBC, the claim is in a 2009 diplomatic message from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Lakhvi was responsible for the Lashkar's "military budget" as of July 2009, the cable said.

He was arrested in Pakistan for his alleged involvement in the November 26-28, 2008, terrorist attack on Mumbai in which 166 people were killed.

The leaked cable, sent Aug 10, 2009, by Clinton, said that Lakhvi, along with the group's founder Hafiz Saeed, "continued to run" LeT "despite being detained for their role" in the Mumbai attacks.

Hafiz Saeed, who was held after the Mumbai attacks but released without charge, now heads Jamaat-ud-Dawa, an Islamic charity widely accused of being a front for LeT.

The leaked cable said Lakhvi was responsible for the group's annual $5.2 million "military operations budget" as of mid-July 2009, a time when he was in prison.

"He reportedly used the money to purchase all materials required for LeT operations other than weapons and ammunition," the cable said, quoting a source.

The message went on to allege that Lakhvi and Saeed "planned, directed and executed" the LeT's attacks in South Asia.

It said the group is "likely to have used some funds collected in the name of Jamaat-ud-Dawa's charitable activities in support of multiple LeT terrorist operations, including the November 2008 Mumbai attacks".

Mumbai terror suspect Rana’s trial set for Feb 14

Chicago: Pakistani-Canadian terror suspect Tahawwur Hussain Rana, co-accused with Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Headley in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case, will go on trial in a federal court here Feb 14.

Wearing an orange jumpsuit and leg shackles Rana stood before US District Judge Harry Leinenweber here Monday as defence and prosecution attorneys hashed out dates and details of the trial, according to Fox News.

Rana, 49, and Pakistani American Headley, who has confessed to his role in the November 2008 attacks that killed 166 people, were indicted Feb 15 for their "roles in India and Denmark Terrorism Conspiracies".

Rana, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of providing "material support" for the attack. Rana and Headly were also allegedly part of a plot to attack a Danish newspaper that printed a controversial cartoon about prophet Mohammed.

Rana's lawyer Patrick W Blegen told Leinenweber that they haven't yet got all of the transcripts of recorded conversations involving their client.

Many of those recordings need to be translated, so the defence says it needs time to get that done, but will be ready for the February court date.

Blegen told the judge they need to know what evidence the government deems classified. Sensitive material may have to be presented behind closed doors. The judge set another status hearing for Dec. 13 to address that.

A bearded and bespectacled Rana calmly glanced around the half empty courtroom as his attorneys spoke, Fox said. The trial is expected to take a month.
