Osmond avoids abuse questions

Marie Osmond has refused to address allegations she became a victim of domestic abuse during her 21-year marriage to Brian Blosil, insisting she has to "move forward" from the "pain" and "sorrow" of the union.
The singer announced she was divorcing record producer Blosil in 2007 and tabloid reports have since claimed the relationship was tainted by episodes of violence.

Osmond has remained silent about the rumours and she maintained her position when she was quizzed about the gossip during a candid TV interview with Oprah Winfrey.
She admitted the relationship had been a troublesome one, but stopped short of going into detail about the specific problems that spelled the end of her second marriage.
She said, "I had a very bad marriage, a lot of pain, a lot of sorrow. A lot of trying, a lot of effort, but you can't sit in something, you have to move forward.
"I really think at this point, with my children - I still have four children at home - you have to move forward. I will say this - as you move into a second marriage, for me, I was just really, really, really, really, really tired when I made my decision. You marry at the level of your self esteem; make sure you have self worth."
During the interview, Osmond revealed her late son Michael Bryan, who committed suicide in February, had urged the star to step back onto the dating scene so she could find happiness.
But she confessed she wasn't ready to begin a new romance just yet.
She told Winfrey, "He said, 'Mom, I want you to find a good man.' ...I don't know that I'm ready for that but he knew that walking through life alone was hard. He wanted me to be happy..."

Google’s Nexus One to Get Gingerbread Android Update Soon [RUMOR]

According to a tweet from the Open Handset Alliance’s Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez, those with a Nexus One in their possession should be getting Android 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread) in “the next few days.”

The assertion makes sense, given the rumor that Gingerbread will rise on November 11.

Just last month, the release’s mascot, a gigantic gingerbread man, arrived on Google’s campus amidst a flurry of excitement.

As we said back then, this new iteration represents a change in the Android (Android) landscape. While previous versions, like Froyo, were intended for mobile devices, Gingerbread is said to also include functionality for tablets.
The Nexus One was far from the most popular Android device; it was discontinued in July following disappointing sales. We’re guessing that the update will roll out to other devices in relatively short order as well (if Vasquez’s tweet is true), getting it in the hands of many more users.

We’re still waiting for more news on the fabled Nexus Two, the Nexus One’s possible successor that will supposedly (if it exists) run Gingerbread as well. In the meantime, Nexus One owners, keep an eye on your handsets and let us know when the update rolls in.

Newlyweds back on dry land after spending honeymoon on stranded cruise ship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Thousands of cruise ship passengers, many from the Valley, are back on dry land after being stranded since Sunday.

Videos have surfaced capturing the first moments of crisis on the ship when the engine room blew, prompting alarms to go off.

Passengers say they smelled smoke and a crew member announced there was a lot of smoke in the engine area through the intercom. The crew member assured the passengers they were not sinking but they were stranded without electrical power, clogged toilets and food that was going bad.

Tugboats dragged the Carnival Splendor cruise ship to San Diego Thursday morning.

3TV was at the home of a Valley family whose loved ones were aboard the cruise ship. The couple got married Saturday and spent their honeymoon on the ship.

The 3,300 passengers were given a free Carnival cruise to use in the future.

The National Transportation and Safety Board is investigating.

Latin Grammys 2010: The ceremony, the goodie bag and the lovers!

Being the 11^th year of the function was worth $11,000 and this goodie bag not basket is not bound by any one particular demography but is of international taste and much thought have gone into preparing the bag. However, the show was also special as one of the golden couple of the Latin Music world walked the rep carpet – Marc Anthony

and Jennifer Lopez.

Both the singers were seen cozying up during the show and posed for the photographers and at one point in the award show Nelly Furtado posed with the couple for pics. Congress rejects Jayalalithaa’s offer of support

New Delhi/Chennai: The Congress Thursday rejected AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa's offer of support to the UPA government in the event of the DMK deciding to withdraw from the ruling coalition in case Telecom Minister A. Raja is asked to go in view of the 2G spectrum allocation controversy.

"At the moment it is very clear that DMK is our important alliance partner. Whatever Jayalalithaa has said is her view. We have nothing to comment on it," party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said here.

Jayalalithaa Thursday offered to back the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) if it decided on sacking of tainted minister A. Raja, who belongs to alliance partner DMK, over his alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum allocation.

Jayalalithaa made the offer in an interview to TimesNow television channel, saying she had no conditions behind propping Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government beyond restoring probity in public life.

The former Tamil Nadu chief minister said the AIADMK had nine members in the Lok Sabha and with the help of "like-minded parties" could offer support of 18 MPs -- to make up for the DMK's 18 if the latter withdrew its legislative backing to Manmohan Singh.

She said she was making the unilateral gesture on the presumption that the prime minister was not sacking Raja despite mounting demands for his ouster over the spectrum scam fearing this could rob him of the majority support in the Lok Sabha and perhaps lead to early elections.

"The reason is very simple. It is coalition politics. To put it plainly and bluntly, it is obvious the Congress feels that any precipitate action against Raja will result in the DMK withdrawing its support to the union coalition government, and the Congress obviously fears that its fragile coalition will collapse and this will lead to mid-term polls," she said.

Jayalalithaa warned that any further delay in moving against Raja -- who has refused to quit and who enjoys the solid backing of the DMK chief K. Karunanidhi -- would further dent the image of the Congress.

The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), submitted to the government Wednesday, is believed to have indicted Communications and Information Technology Minister A. Raja.

The scam is said to have caused a loss of Rs.1.76 lakh crore to the government.

Dhoni bats for struggling Gambhir

The left-handed opener has struggled with the bat of late, aggregating 86 runs from his last 10 Test innings.

Gambhir, 29, missed India's Test against Australia in Bangalore last month with a knee injury and his replacement Murali Vijay scored a solid 139, putting pressure on his more experienced team-mate to perform.


"Players do go out of form," Dhoni told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Thursday.

"It happens to everyone in cricket. Gambhir has set the benchmark so high that expectations of him have grown. With Gambhir, it is more about the pressure to perform than the fear of failure.

"The kind of innings he has played in the past shows how good a cricketer he is. He is returning from an injury and is working hard on his fitness. I am sure he will come good with the bat sooner than later."

Gambhir, with 2,846 runs from 34 Tests at an average of nearly 50, has been pivotal in India's rise to the top of Test rankings.

He was named International Cricket Council Test Player of the Year in 2009 for a series of good starts in tandem with opening partner Virender Sehwag.

Gambhir's 11-hour, second-innings knock of 137 against New Zealand in Napier last year helped India salvage a hard-fought draw.

Dhoni said Gambhir was a proven performer and Vijay would have to wait for his chance to make it to the squad.

"Gambhir is our best bet for the opener's slot. Vijay has done well whenever he has been given the chance. But I think he will have to wait his turn."

Vijay, 26, has scored 509 runs from the eight Tests he has played so far at an average of 42.41.

Dhoni also supported Suresh Raina, who cut a sorry figure in the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad, scoring three and a duck.

"You cannot form an opinion on a player based on one match," Dhoni said. "We must give everyone a chance.

"It is easy to sit outside and make comments. But one must step into the player's shoes to understand how tough it is to go out and perform each time."

Dhoni hoped the wicket at the new Rajiv Gandhi Stadium -- hosting its first Test -- would give the bowlers a fair chance after a placid one in Ahmedabad made the draw inevitable.

Hyderabad has hosted three Tests before, all against New Zealand, but at the older Lal Bahadur Stadium.

"We have played quite a few one-day games on this wicket. It is not difficult to judge this wicket. It is flat but will offer a bit of bounce which will allow the batsman to play his shots."

The third and final Test will be played in Nagpur from November 20-24 followed by five one-day internationals from November 28.

BCCI drops Yuvraj from Grade A, hikes retainership and fees

Talented left-hander Suresh Raina, who has been in good nick, has been upgraded to the top grade which has nine players, including  captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid among others. The Grade-A players will now be entitled to a revised retainership fee of Rs one crore, a substantial hike of Rs 40 lakh from last year's contract.



In another interesting move, the BCCI's Gradation Committee, which met in Chennai today, also got rid of Grade D where some players got an annual retainership of Rs 15 lakh last year. Only 24 players have been offered annual retainership fees against 41 who were offered last season. If anyone from non-contracted player plays for India next season, he will be upgraded to C category, according to a BCCI release.

The BCCI also hiked the retainership fees of the players as the Grade A players will now receive Rs 1 crore from the Rs 60 lakh they received last year. The Grade B players will now get Rs 50 lakh instead of Rs 40 lakh while those in Grade C will continue getting Rs 25 lakh.

The Indian players who will be in the playing XI will be now getting Rs 7 lakh per Test match, Rs 4 lakh for an ODI and Rs 2 lakh for a T20 match. For Yuvraj, the demotion to Grade B will be another blow after being dropped from the Test squad in the two recent series.

Delhi batsman Virat Kohli, who has had a prolific ODI season, has been rewarded with a Grade B retainership improving upon his earlier Grade D category. Similarly, Rohit Sharma who was earlier in Grade B has been demoted to Grade C.

Cheteshwar Pujara who scored a half century on debut against Australia has moved to Grade C along with Karnataka pacers Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun and Tamil Nadu off-spinner Ravi Ashwin. Murali Vijay and Pragyan Ojha also made significant strides as they were included in the Grade B category.

However, the Pathan brothers Irfan and Yusuf, UP pacers Rudra Pratap Singh, Sudeep Tyagi, Tamil Nadu captain Dinesh Karthik, Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel, Bengal's Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhiman Saha and Ashok Dinda, Delhi batsman Shikhar Dhawan, Mumbai players Ajinkya Rahane, Wasim Jaffer and Abhishek Nayar are without any central contracts.

Following are the players offered central contracts: (Grade A): Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan.

(Grade B): Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Praveen Kumar, Virat Kohli, M Vijay, Pragyan Ojha.

Vivek Oberoi, dad in suit ad

Vivek Oberoi has become the new brand ambassador of a suiting company replacing cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

While he has done ads before, this is the first time he has come together with his dad Suresh Oberoi.


Father and son were offered a tempting package to shoot the suiting ad together. Initially Vivek was a tad nervous about shooting with his father, as they'd never worked together before but once on the set, he was comfortable.

Oberoi Sr has not faced the camera in years, but has now decided to come out of his self-imposed exile and do ads and films. Papa Oberoi wasn't the original choice for the role.

Says an insider, "When people from the company and ad agency approached Vivek with the ad describing the concept of getting all ages together, and signing a senior model to act opposite VO in the ad, it was Sureshji who suggested that he play the father's role."

The TVC has been shot by Setu who shot Taare Zameen Par while photographer Subi Samuel has shot the print campaign. The ad was shot in Mumbai.

Adds the source, "It depicts an Indian style of togetherness a perfect blend of growth and change in harmony which is marked by an individual respect for each other.

It portrays the father and son duo depicting the Indian tradition in a classy way. The theme of the campaign is the cultural bonding between two generations represented by the father and the son.

Abhishek and Amitabh Bachchan came together in the Maruti Versa car ad. The Bachchans were signed for their combination of youthfulness and stature.

Hema Malini and her daughter Ahana did the Kent water purifier ad. Later Esha was also roped in for the same ad as they represented fitness and healthy living.

Neetu Singh and daughter Riddhima have done a print ad for jewellers Notandass and Sons as they represented style and elegance.

Anil Kapoor and daughter Sonam did the Montblanc pen ad. The ad was aimed at showcasing the brand as not just a pen but also as a legacy which can be passed on from generation to generation.

Fardeen and his dad (late) Feroz Khan did the Pan Bahar paan masala ad. Feroz represented the older generation that still remembers Pan Bahar's taste, while Fardeen is the youth who wonders why his dad is so fond of it.

Online matka racket busted

Members of the Central Crime Branch busted an online national matka operation with the arrest of three agents in Ejipura last evening.



Based on an anonymous tip-off, officials raided a house in the area and recovered nearly Rs 75,000 in cash, four cell phones and some chits.

Officials said the matka operation is headquartered in Mumbai and the three men, Sadanand, Victor and Hem Singh, are only the agents.

They were taken to Viveknagar police station, where they spent the night.

"They have been running the operation from a small house for some time.

These three are merely henchmen in a bigger operation.

They are agents who entice people into online gambling," said a senior police official from the Viveknagar police station.

"At this point, it's unclear where the tip-off came from. They'll be produced in court tomorrow," he added.

Kidnapped infant found abandoned

Was discovered by a sweeper inside a restroom near Chandni Chowk

Samiksha is back with her family. And she has had quite an adventure. At 2 pm on Monday, the same day she was kidnapped, the 9-month-old was discovered by a sweeper inside a washroom at Bhagirath Place, near Chandni Chowk in old Delhi. The sweeper took the infant to the police station and the cops sent her to a child welfare organization in Connaught Place. The organisation flashed a message across to all police stations in the Capital on Tuesday night. Finally, Samiksha was identified and accepted by her family on Wednesday evening and her 48-hour-long ordeal came to an end. 

"It's like a rebirth for me, I thank god for giving me my child back. But I will never forgive the culprits. They have to pay for what they did," said Bhawana, the infant's mother.

Police suspect Samiksha's father, who divorced Bhawana some time ago, is behind the incident. The accused and his family are absconding. The cops raided their house again on Wednesday without luck.

Pilot arrested for molesting 8-year-old

A 39-year-old pilot of a private airline was arrested last night by the Samta Nagar police in Kandivli after he was accused of molesting an eight-year-old girl.

According to the police, this was not the first time that Udham Rawat had committed such a crime, but this time the girl's father registered a complaint at Samta Nagar police station and got him arrested.

Rawat who lives in the A wing of Oberoi Park in Samta Nagar was passing through the main compound of his building.

The incident occurred when Rawat asked his maid to lure the girl under the pretext of offering chocolates to the child. Not doubting the intentions of her neighbour, the victim reached Rawat's apartment.

Rawat then caught hold of her and allegedly began touching her private parts and fondling her.

The police told MiD DAY that the girl told her father of the incident and he registered a complaint with the police. Senior Inspector A Kenjale said, "The pilot has been released on bail and the investigation is going on."

The girl's father said, "Thank God my daughter is safe and nothing major has happened. But the police should arrest the maid too, as she is also involved in the crime."

Rawat is separated from his wife and stays alone in his apartment. His neighbours say that they found Rawat's behaviour strange but never expected that he could do something of this sort.

Dolly Bindra may be creating a ruckus on Bigg Boss, high-pitched voice et al, but her hubby Kaizaad Kermani claims he doesn't watch the reality show!

"I have barely seen it and prefer to keep myself away from all this. But I do get updates from people and via email about the happenings.

Of late, I have been spending a lot of time in Malaysia," says Kaizad who runs a Bollywood event management company, Starz &Showz.

He states that he knows the show's host Salman extremely well for a decade now. And Dolly calls him Bhai like those close to him do. "If I need to know anything about the show, I just call Salman," he says.

According to him Bigg Boss is a game and like any game, which you play for money, the stakes are high and you have to go all out. "The contestants are playing for money and so is Dolly."
When his actress wife was approached for the show, he had no reservations. "It was her decision to be part of it.

And I knew what to expect. I have seen the international versions like Big Brother so I was familiar with the format.

About the doings of the housemates he says, "That is expected. They have been selected because of a certain reason their reputation. Except for the wrestler The Great Khali, all the rest have one and they have to maintain it."

Personal attacks are all part of the game. "If you keep 10-12 people in a small space with no stepping out, what can you expect?. Even in Big Brother, the happenings get really ugly."

Those who know Dolly off-screen know that she is full of life with a bindaas attitude. Her extrovert nature with a care-a-damn attitude gels well with the show's format.

Sanjay's babies come home....

The Dutt twins will be discharged from hospital as early as next week


Sanjay and Maanayata Dutt will bring their twins home in the third week of November, a month after they were born. In a Rolls Royce, no less!

Says a friend of the couple, "The Dutts are very eager to bring their son and daughter home now. Their nursery is ready. Manaa will be meeting her doctor tomorrow to find out the exact date when her babies can come home."

Incidentally, the twins were born more than a month premature and had to be kept in incubators. Sanju had specially bought an RR for the babies and their mother.

"Sanju's sister Priya will accompany the proud parents when they leave the hospital in the luxury car.

The babies have to be held in a special way while travelling and the RR is the most spacious car to be able to do that," reveals the friend.

The friend adds that Maana cancelled plans to move to a five-star in Worli until the babies were discharged. "It wouldn't save her time, the traffic from the hotel to the hospital is bad anyway, so she decided against it.

Also, she prefers to eat ghar ka khaana and she wouldn't be getting exactly what she wants at a hotel." So, Mrs Dutt commutes from her home in Bandra to Breach Candy several times a day to feed her bachchas.

And apparently, Daddy Dutt is so devoted to his babies that he makes time to meet them every day, no matter where he is.

"Often after shooting, even if it's as late as 2 am, Sanju drops in to meet his babies. Sometimes when Manaa is travelling at night, they go together."

Sushmita gets a Salman painting

Takes home a Salman Khan painting from his personal collection. The actor gave it to her because she understood what it meant

Sushmita Sen is now the proud owner of a Salman Khan painting. But the actor didn't gift her his work, she took it off his wall and carried it home with her.

An art connoisseur, Sush has been in awe of Sallu's paintings for a while. And she has pleaded with him to part with this one painting for over two years now.

The actor kept putting it off until the evening of his Being Human show this year. This time around, when Sen came over to Khan's home, she simply walked home with it when she left.

This particular work of art shows a close-up of a praying man's face with his eyes closed. He is holding prayer beads in his hands.

Also, the artist has not given his subject a forehead, leaving in doubt his religion. Hindus, Muslims, as well as Christians all use prayer beads while praying.

But while Hindus cover their head with a cloth while praying. Muslims wear a cap. But with the forehead missing from the painting it is a picture of a man praying to a God.It was the deep meaning behind the painting that made a connection  with Sush.

The source adds, "Sush got the point that the missing forehead was to imply the man could be of any religion - Hindu, Muslim, Christian (see box). The sentiment was to depict the idea that God is one irrespective of what religion you follow."

When contacted Sushmita says, "I am a huge fan of  Salman "The Artist". I love the freedom he enjoys in his creative expression.

The first time I saw one of his paintings I didn't notice the colours, the strokes or the brilliance of form what won me over instantly was "The Reverence" "The Celebration of Faith" his paintings depict.

Work like that can only stem from the inside from the spirit!! which is why I think it's so powerful that the proceeds from the sale of Salman's paintings are directed to charity.

I am thrilled to have one of the finest paintings Salman has ever painted "Jesus with his beads" in prayer!! Salman was forced to gift it to me :) and I will cherish it for my whole life!!

Ali and the crew of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan were also with them. The unit had wound up the shoot at Mussourie and were on their way to Chandigarh.

The dhaba was one of those quaint, rustic ones you see on highways. It was completely deserted. Katrina, Imran and Ali thoroughly enjoyed eating there without the restriction of people staring at them."

Guilty pleasure

The actors decided to take a break after a six-hour long drive. "Kat took one look at the rich, spicy Punjabi food and decided break her diet and have some too.

She enjoyed herself thoroughly, ordering daal, rotis, chicken and mutton. She normally avoids too much oily and spicy food but just couldn't resist the food when she saw it.

Now, she will have some rigorous dieting and workouts to do when she reaches Chandigarh." Says Katrina, "I am not dieting. I am feasting on some delicious tadka daal and mutton."

Imran gets 16 thappads from Katrina in a single day

It's not what you think. This isn't a filmy fight, just a fallout of Imran Khan's quest for the perfect slap for a scene in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.

On the sets of Yash Raj's latest film starring Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan, what seemed like a simple enough shot soon turned into a slap fest.
Kaif's character is supposed to slap Khan's in an emotional scene. However, Khan, ever on the lookout for innovation, suggested that they make the slap look real.

Trying too hard to follow in the footsteps of uncle Aamir Khan (whose quest for perfection is legendary for the number of people it has both, annoyed and impressed in the film industry), perhaps?

Considering the script called for a single slap, it should have been a simple enough take. Enter Khan, who insisted that his co-star slap him for real, instead of faking it, and that too not once, but 16 times. His logic? So that the director would have a variety of slaps to choose from.

"Left to me, I'd have done just one fake slap and moved on. But Imran insisted that I do it realistically," recounts Kaif.

She continues, "Imran even called his 'boy' to count the number of slaps. It had to be 16 tight slaps, no more and no less. I don't know why he wanted to be slapped that exact number of times."

Naturally, after the sequence, Khan was seen massaging his face and jaw. Kaif says she isn't proud of the pain she has caused her co-star. But she's happy about how real the slap looks on screen.

"It's the most authentic screen-slap audiences will ever see," Kaif promises.

Thankfully, it was a slap and not a kiss, or we shudder to think how Kaif's alleged beau Ranbir Kapoor would have reacted. We might just have been in for another slap face-off, this time between Khan and Kapoor. Ouch.

Katrina and Barbara's films have similar titles

Same-to-same title. But YRF says, not same-to-same story
Barbara Mori's Spanish film My Brother's Wife releases in India this month with the titles A Beautiful Wife in English and Spanish Beauty in Hindi. The title of Mori's film is similar to Yash Raj Films project and Katrina Kaif-Imran Khan starrer  Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Sources reveal that both the projects have similar storylines.



While My Brother's Wife has an adulterous themedealing with the affair of a woman with her husband's brother, the Yash Raj film is a toned down version of the same. It tells the story of a guy (Imran) falling for his brother's (Ali Zafar) fianc ©e (Katrina). Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is still in production, while the Barbara film releases in India soon.

No threat
An industry insider says, "YRF doesn't consider Barbara's film as a threat to their project. They feel its release won't have any effect on them as the Katrina-Imran film has more of a romantic tone than an adult one. Even though the basic premise is the same, the treatment would be very different."



Keeping in mind the similarities between the titles - Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and My Brother's Wife, the distributors have decided to name the Mori film as A Beautiful Wife. Dhaval Gada of Pen India who is distributing it says, "We heard about the film My Brother's Dulhan. The title did make us think that the theme of their film maybe similar to our movie, Spanish Beauty. However, we do not know their script or storyline. Anyway, we have tweaked the original story of Spanish Beauty to suit Indian tastes and the film now reflects the triangular relationship between a husband, wife and the husband's brother."

When contacted, the Yash Raj spokesperson denied any similarities between the two films. "It's not true.There are no similarities between the two stories whatsoever."

Prithviraj Chavan is the new CM

Congress  President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday selected Union minister Prithviraj Chavan as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra
 

 

Prithviraj Chavan said that he had been informed by Defence Minister A.K. Antony about the Congress chief's decision to make him the next chief minister of Maharashtra and added that he was "highly honoured and humbled".
The minister of state in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said he had had requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to relieve him of his duties and had got his blessings.
"This morning Mr. A.K. Anthony informed me that the Congress president has chosen me to lead Maharashtra. I requested the prime minister to relieve me from the responsibilities of the union government and he has blessed me," Chavan told reporters here.
He said he was "highly honoured and humbled" by the fact that the Congress leadership and the MLAs of Maharashtra had called upon him "to undertake the responsibility of heading the government of Maharashtra at this important juncture".
"I seek the cooperation and support of all and I promise that I will do my best to give leadership to the state, an eminent state in the country," Chavan said, adding that he would be leaving for Mumbai by Wednesday evening.

Known to enjoy the confidence of both Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chavan (64) is a technocrat who entered the hurly burly of electoral politics at the persuasion of Rajiv Gandhi.
An engineer by profession, Chavan graduated from BITS Pilani and got a masters from the University of California. Chavan has been credited with research in introduction of computerisation of Indian languages.
Hailing from Karad district of Western Maharashtra, Chavan belongs to the politically dominant Maratha community and his elevation to the Chief Minister's post is also being seen as a move by the Congress to stop consolidation of Maratha votes in favour of NCP.
Chavan is known for not getting on well with NCP chief and Union Minister Sharad Pawar. His father, a prominent Congressman D R alias Anandrao Chavan, was the "diwan" of the Indore royalty and a well-known legal luminary, who served as minister in the cabinets of Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi.
Prithviraj Chavan made his maiden entry into the Lok Sabha in 1991 from Karad and went on to win the seat in 1996 and 1998.
In 1999, he lost to Shriniwas Patil of the NCP. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2002 and 2008. He has been the interface between 10, Janpath and 7, Race Course Road ever since his appointment as Minister of State in the PMO in 2004.
The affable, low-profile Chavan has the trust of Sonia and his pro-reform leaning has the strong approval of Manmohan Singh.
As a member of the UPA-Left Coordination Committee on Indo-US nuclear deal, Chavan steadfastly advocated the government's agenda and, after Manmohan Singh government won the trust vote, he travelled to many countries to deliver the Prime Minister's message ahead of the IAEA meeting.
Considered one of PM's chief trouble-shooters, he played a major role in the smooth passage of the civil nuclear liability bill in Parliament.
He currently holds five portfolios, the highest by any minister in the UPA government, including Science and Technology, Earth sciences, Parliamentary affairs, Public grievances and Pension and Ministry of personnel, which includes the CBI

Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider announced his retirement from international cricket one day after he fled the team hotel in Dubai and travelled to London claiming he was receiving threats from match-fixers.

"I have decided it is best for me to retire from international cricket since my family and I are constantly getting threats. It is best I leave international cricket," Zulqarnain told Geo News channel from London.
